This week I attempted to put reality TV clips together to show how my 2 of my sources interact with each other. Emphasis on ATTEMPTED. First, here is a basic rundown of the two sources:
Ziti Papacharissi, a professor at the University of Illinois, delves into why the audience enjoys watching reality TV shows, especially because of gratification and companionship in her paper “An Exploratory Study Of Reality Appeal: Uses And Gratifications Of Reality TV Shows” as well as her other paper "An Examination Of Personality Traits And Television Viewing Motives Using Patterns Of Interrelation And Quadratic Analysis."

| Papacharissi will be portrayed by Roxxxy Andrews |
Deborah Jermyn ,in "The Audience Is Dead; Long Live the Audience!: Interactivity, ‘Telephilia’ and the Contemporary Television Audience,” examines how audience interactions with a television show is now vital for shows to prosper.

| The role of Jermyn will be played by the wonderful Alyssa Edwards. |

Relationships between TV and viewers is important to form.
They cause bonds to form.

Gratification is the key
to reality TV
We look to tv to fill our needs

Gratification draws us in
But inclusion keeps us in
We really like to binge
While including our opinions

Now onto a serious discussion of the sources. Papacharissi in one of her papers mentions how media is starting to make an emergence in TV culture, as she states in one sentence that people would rather gratify themselves using social media rather than TV. Jermyn’s source provides more insight on this by explaining how individuals want to be part of the show, whether it be through knowing something the contestants don’t know, participating with hashtags that appear on the screen, or voting for a fan favorite. All of these actions make the viewer seem more included in the television program. Additionally, Papcharissi is more interested in the motives behind individuals watching reality TV, which is mostly gratification. Jermyn with her interaction theory shows why they keep watching. Both show why they come back. Combining these two sources allows me to show why one watches a reality TV program, continues to watch it, and comes back to watching it as well as explore the interactions social media and interaction have with the audience when they are watching tv.

Catherine -- every. single. week. you deliver with your blog. The video was out of control -- I've never loved anything more. Picturing these two scholars take shape as drag queens is, perhaps, the most fulfilling moment of my professional career.
ReplyDeleteALSO -- I think you did great analytical work here. You should how to two sources work together to give a fuller picture into why people both start and continue watching reality TV. Excellent. I want, now, for you to start thinking about how your research converses with those two researchers.
I love you and you're perfect.
This post was so funny. I love how you used the drag queens to represent your sources. It makes it a lot more fun to think about.
ReplyDeleteI like how you were able to combine the two to create a whole picture about reality tv. I think this would especially be useful to create like a definition in your introduction for the reason people are hooked on reality tv. Where there any differences that made them hard to define? Were these two source easy to combine or difficult?
